Here’s another bonus – you can make Christmas trees out of old issues! Just note that one magazine only makes a half tree. So either put your tree in front of a wall or use two magazines to make a whole one. Or keep turning your half tree around as your guests move around the room.
Special thanks to Caker Cooking reader Stephanie for telling me about this!
Here's how you make one:
Take a Reader’s Digest, preferably with a photo of a firefighter carrying an elderly person on the cover.
Fold the upper corner down to make a big triangle. Then fold the lower corner up. Do this over and over until your fingers hurt real bad. Tear off the covers.
And there you have it!
Leave it as-is or spray paint the crap out of it.
Turned out FABULOUS, Brian!! I know your mother will be so happy when you give hers to her for Christmas! I love the pom-pons, too - way to make it your own!
ReplyDeleteIt's those small details that make all the difference, Stephanie. Thanks for reminding me about these. BTW - I had to buy a new copy of Reader's Digest and it cost me SIX BUCKS! Doesn't that seem expensive for such a little magazine? Of course, I did get the tree as a bonus.
DeleteREALLY?! That IS a lot! I am surprised you didn't find some for $0.25 at your church bazaars. Next year, troll local doctors' offices for a "free" copy…. (Just a hint in order to save on your holiday shopping!)
DeleteThat's a good idea. I suppose I could get one from my dentist, too. That is, if I ever went to the dentist.
DeleteI'm so glad that you posted this! I was just talking about these to some people but we weren't sure how.
ReplyDeleteEartha, it truly is a Christmas miracle. I hope you made lots and lots of these.
DeleteThis is the tackiest thing on this blog. And that's saying something!
ReplyDeleteWhat? I don't know what you're talking about. And for the record, someone told me they saw these trees at CB2 the other day. Obviously, they got the idea from my blog.
DeleteThis is the best. I am skipping the Christmas party on Saturday and making a host of these...thanks.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good Saturday night to me. Keep the eggnog near. It helps dull the pain in your fingers from folding all those pages.
DeleteOh, I was hoping you'd make one of these! Isn't there some way of making an angel out of RD too?
ReplyDeleteWhy, yes.I did a search on Google. Looks like you put a styrofoam head on top and make a pipe cleaner halo. Too complicated for me, sadly. If you make one, send me a pic.
DeleteI remember one year my mom took all different sizes and made a set of carolers! She painted the bodies red and we cut little "books" from sheet music for them to hold.
ReplyDeleteBack when I was a kid, you only needed one magazine to make a tree...the Reader's Digest was thicker then.
