Nevertheless, Captain Crunch has always made me a little uneasy. I can’t figure out what it’s supposed to be. It’s not fruit or chocolate-flavoured. It doesn’t have any freeze-dried pastel marshmallows. I don’t even know what's up with those shapes. Are they barrels? Pillows? Clutch purses? I suppose the one thing Captain Crunch has going for it is its crunch. And the sugar.
Speaking of sugar, these cookies gon’ wind you up real good. They’re buttery, crispy and, yes, sweet. After eating one (or two), call your dentist before your teeth fall out.
1 cup margarine (I used butter.)
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 ½ cups flour, sifted
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon baking soda in 1 teaspoon boiling water
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 ½ or 3 cups Captain Crunch cereal
Cream margarine and sugar, add egg and vanilla. Add baking soda and water. Then add remaining dry ingredients. Drop on a cookie sheet and bake at 350º for 8-10 minutes.

They are definitely clutch purses. This cereal was clearly originally Cap'n Clutch before the 1960s corporate marketing team reinvented his image and the entire brand. Poor guy. He used to love his mom's ghetto brown-sugar-and-butter-over-rice dessert and the clutch shape was an homage to her impeccable taste in accessories AND her recipe inspiration.
ReplyDeleteAlso I love that the pic is of the "Capitaine Crounche" side.
You know, Rosie, I always imagined the Captain wearing fishnets and high heels when he posed for his cereal box portrait. Let's face it: many sugar cereal characters waved their freak flags in their off hours. The freakest of them all? Boo-Berry.
DeleteCaptain Crunch was like crack for me when I was a kid. Right now my mouth is watering from the memory of that sugary burst. My jaw used to hurt from the sugar overload but I would keep going back for more.
ReplyDeleteA hurting jaw is one thing, Clare, but remember how these sugar cereals would shred the tender flesh of your upper palate? Yeeouch!
ReplyDeleteI never had that problem - can't believe anyone did actually.
