Apple Head Doll Competition

Oh, autumn!

It's the favourite time of year for cakers. It means hand-knit acrylic sweaters, church bazaars, Stove Top Stuffing, and, of course, apples. But since cakers don’t eat apples (at least not in our pies), we make crafts with them.

Announcing the first (and probably last)
Caker Cooking
Apple Head Doll Competition!

Simply make an apple head doll and email me the photo when it’s all dried up and wrinkly. I’ll post all the photos on Caker Cooking in late October and the public will vote the winner.

Note: the apple head dolls will be judged only on their heads, not their bodies.

The winner will receive a gift pack of four fantastic cookbooks from the friendly folks at Random House Canada, including Marshmallow Madness, Tiny Food Party, Real Snacks and Little Old Lady Recipes.

What’s involved in making an apple head doll?
Well, an apple. And a knife. And a little time to dry out. Check out appledolls.org for step-by-step instructions on how to make one and to see some samples. I’ve also created an apple head doll Pinterest board to get your creative (apple) juices flowing.

If you’d like to participate (and, really, why let all those good apples go to waste?) simply email cakercooking at gmail dot com no later than Sunday, Sept. 23 at midnight to say “Count me in!” Then I’ll email you back with all the specifics. And although I probably won't get this many, I'm going to cap it off at 25 participants.

Yes, there are rules and regulations, so please read over those.

I'll be making an apple head doll, too. But I won't be in the competition. I wouldn't win, anyway. I'll be lucky if mine even looks human. But I'll document the progress of my apple head so you can follow the train wreck magical transformation of my apple.

Good luck!

  1. Apple Head Dolls scare the bejeezus out of me. Why oh why do perfectly good apples get sacrificed to "create" these horrors. I say squeeze the extra apples into a nice stiff cider instead!

    1. Melanie, I agree the apple head dolls can be a little on the creepy side. I mean, I wouldn't want to come across one in an abandoned cabin in the woods. Crap. I think I just set myself up for a nightmare tonight.

  3. Brian, I loved your book, Natural Order and I purchased it in Hardcover! I'm so glad to have discovered Caker Cooking and I think I can say that I am a Caker.

I have family recipe to submit. I don't know where it originated as in what cook book, but it was handed down to me from my mom and is the highlight of every family gathering. It's a side dish.

    Broccoli Casserole

    1 lb fresh broccoli, parboiled,
1 can cream of chicken soup ( can substitute Cream of Mushroom)
    1 TBSP mayonnaise
    1/4 grated cheddar cheese
    1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
    2 TBSP melted butter
Cut broccoli in small pieces, parboil and place in 1 quart casserole. Combine soup, cheese, and mayonnaise; pour over broccoli. Mix crumbs with melted butter;sprinkle on top of casserole. Bake uncovered in 350 F oven 40 minutes or until tender. Makes about 6 servings. Can be doubled.

    It is really delicious!!!!

    1. Hi Debzi133. I'm glad you liked the book and I'm happy to hear you've accepted your true, caker self. Your recipe looks delicious. I'm definitely going to add it to my collection. It's similar to a Broccoli Casserole I posted last year, but has some differences, mainly in that it uses real cheese. (Mine uses Cheez Whiz.) So I might have to do a taste-off between the two.

  4. Oh I tell you, Brian, my family recipe will win in taste test hands down. Yes real cheese! I'm going to check out your cheese whiz recipe. By the way, my mom brought me and my sibs up on Cheez Whiz Sandwiches and Campbell's Soup for lunch ( just one per meal, not both). My mom is definitely a caker - she wasn't going to make both a cheez whiz sandwich for lunch AND Campbell's soup of we kids! :)Little Old Recipes - I think I'm going to have to purchase that for myself and my sister for her upcoming birthday. Perfect! Thanks!

  6. My mom made these when I was young. She stopped because I would eat them.

    1. I suppose, on one hand, that counted as a serving of fruit. But didn't the little wire glasses get caught in your throat?
