Spaghetti Pie

If there’s one ethnicity that has the biggest bone to pick with cakers, it’s the Italians. They gave us pizza. We turned it into Pillsbury Pizza Pops. They gave us tomato sauce. We turned it into Ragú. And they gave us frittata di spaghetti e ricotta which we then turned into Spaghetti Pie.

Italians also gave us spumoni ice cream but we gave it the hell back.

Nevertheless, this Spaghetti Pie (prounounce it “spageddy pah” when serving it to Italians and watch them bite their fists) tastes damn good. Especially the day after it’s made. So if you make it – and I hope you do – warm it up in the oven the next day.

As the Italians say, “Bun appetita!”

3 ½ cups cooked spaghetti
2 tablespoons butter
2 eggs, beaten
½ cup Parmesan cheese
1 cup cottage cheese
1 to 2 cups spaghetti sauce
½ cup mozzarella cheese

Mix cooked spaghetti with butter, eggs and Parmesan cheese. Put into a well greased pie plate. Form a piecrust. Add cottage cheese on top of formed crust. Pour spaghetti sauce onto piecrust. Spread evenly. Bake at 350° for 20 minutes. Sprinkle ½ cup mozzarella cheese on top. Bake 5 minutes more or until cheese melts. This dish freezes well. Thaw before baking.

  1. Hmmm. I think I might have to try this. It certainly looks easy, which I definitely love. And it's got cheese.
    Mmmm. Cheese.

  2. I'm telling you, Veg, this one is pretty dang tasty. And it's almost as easy to make as a Pizza Pop.
Cheese. Deliciousness. Simplicity. Class. What more could a caker ask for?

    1. Copy and paste this link into your browser. It explains Pizza Pops better than I ever could.

    2. Holy crap, Brian! What the hell was that all about? You need to warn a person before you do something like that. Geez.
Was that Menudo? An Asian version of Menudo? Something else?

    3. Truthfully, I have no idea what that was. I just did a YouTube search for Pizza Pops and there it was. You have to admit, though. The song is pretty catchy. If you find yourself singing it in the shower tomorrow, don't blame me.

  4. ZOMG. I've been making spaghetti pie ever since my grandfather gave me my first Junior Cookbook when I was in the 5th grade. My family STILL asks for me to make it when I'm home. A classic.

  5. I can confirm that this is delicious--it's sort of like a meatless lasagna, which makes it a perfect Lenten dish.
For some reason, I had it in my mind that this was spaghetti *pizza* and so used pizza sauce instead of spaghetti sauce. Still was quite tasty.
Referred to is as "spageddy pah", but since husband is not Italian, there was no fist-biting.
I'm giving you major credits for that very neat slice you photographed. Mine was a total mess and ended up looking depressingly like some sort of medical experiment.

    1. Glad you liked it. Pizza sauce, spaghetti sauce, chocolate sauce, it doesn't matter. It all tastes good. The photo was taken the day after I made it, so it had firmed up a bit. The first night it was a little messy.
