Reader Recipe: Kitty Litter Cake

Well, here we are – the final recipe in my month-long Caker Cooking reader bonanza and it seems only fitting to end things with a bang. Or is that a plop?

Believe me, when it comes to caker food, I’ve seen my fair share of train wrecks. But when Kim sent me this recipe for Kitty Litter Cake, well, let's just say the ol' caker elevator managed to go a floor down.

Have you ever seen Tootsie Rolls used in such an imaginative way? The care and attention to detail in this cake is inspiring. My only question is – who would think of this? I mean, what kind of person says, "I want to make a cake that looks like it's made with cat poop?"

On second thought, maybe it's better we not know.

Anyways, thanks to Kim and to all the readers whose recipes I featured this month. If I didn’t post your recipe, fear not. There's still a chance I'll post it in the weeks ahead. Remember – keep those recipes coming by emailing me at cakercooking at gmail dot com.

In the meantime, scoop yourself up some Kitty Litter Cake – and watch for hairballs.

1 package German chocolate cake mix
1 package white cake mix
2 packages instant vanilla pudding mix
1 package vanilla sandwich cookies
3 drops green food coloring
1 package Tootsie Rolls

Prepare cake mixes and bake according to package directions (any size pan).
Prepare pudding according to package directions and chill until ready to assemble. Crumble sandwich cookies in small batches in a food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup add a few drops of green food coloring and mix. When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble them into a large bowl. Toss with 1/2 of the remaining cookie crumbs, and the chilled pudding. You probably won't need all of the pudding, you want the cake to be just moist, not soggy. Line kitty litter box with the kitty litter liner. (See note.) Put cake mixture into box. Put half of the unwrapped Tootsie Rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until softened. Shape the ends so that they are no longer blunt, and curve the Tootsie Rolls slightly. Bury Tootsie Rolls randomly in the cake and sprinkle with half of the remaining cookie crumbs. Sprinkle a small amount of the green colored cookie crumbs lightly over the top. Heat 3 or 4 of the Tootsie Rolls in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake and sprinkle lightly with some of the green cookie crumbs. Heat the remaining Tootsie Rolls until pliable and shape as before. Spread all but one randomly over top of cake mixture. Sprinkle with any remaining cookie crumbs. Hang the remaining Tootsie Roll over side of litter box and sprinkle with a few green cookie crumbs. Serve with the pooper scooper for a gross Halloween dessert.

Note: Oh, god. I just couldn’t do the litter box and the scooper. I just couldn’t.

  1. Your blog is my new guilty pleasure - makes me laugh out loud. Not sure what a Tootsie Roll is but I don't think I want one now anyway!

    1. Tootsie Rolls are chocolate-ish shaped log things. They're pretty good. And, when softened and shaped, share a striking resemblance to cat feces.

  2. Too soon after breakfast for this one! Love the product placement, though.

  3. That thing seriously looks realistic. Especially the poops that missed the box. Ewwwww...

Someone actually brought one of these to an office work party where I worked once. People were MORTIFIED. There was another one that was making the rounds around the same time where you take a clean flower pot and fill it full of layers of pudding and crushed oreos that were supposed to look like dirt. You then stick a fake flower in the top of the pot and serve it with a garden trowel. I think people mixed gummy worms in for the "eeewww!" factor. Not nearly as gross as the kitty litter cake though. Anytime you add faux poop to something, you're going to shock and awe : )

    1. I've seen Dirt Cake before, but it lacks the sophistication of Kitty Litter Cake. I mean, gummi worms? How déclassé.

    2. Brian, only you could write "anyways" and "déclassé" in the same blog post. You really are a writer!

  4. This is a favorite at lots of kids' Halloween parties. Because it's icky and disgusting and a little creepy. Little witches and vampires go nuts for it, or so I'm told by my friends who do the Halloween party thaing.

    1. I don't see why you'd want to reserve it just for Halloween parties. Personally, I think it'd be a big hit at bridal showers. Or euchre tournaments.

  5. OMG did you put it down on the floor next to the toilet? That is so freakin' FULL of win!

    1. Truthfully, that's not the toilet next to it. It's the sink. I still needed to serve the cake to my company, after all, and setting it down next to the toilet was just a little too close for comfort.

  6. I have made this cake twice in my life: once for Halloween (served in a litter box with a scoop) and once for a birthday for my boss (my coworkers encouraged the making of the cake). I'm not sure if I should be proud or ashamed.

  7. Well, the fact that you couldn't use a kitty litter tray and scoop is forgiven due to the awesome placement. That's really gross. Did you eat any of it? It's surprisingly tasty. I think the best part of this cake is shaping the Tootsie Rolls. You can really get artistic with it ; )
    Love, love, love your blog.

    1. Thanks, Kim! And thanks for the recipe. I ate it and it was pretty good. It's hard to go wrong with cake, pudding and cookies. Although, you have to watch out for those hidden Tootsie Rolls. Especially after it's been in the fridge overnight. I had to go get three new teeth.

  10. This is a Caker's Dream of a Cake! It's a little more work that I would usually go to as Caker, but as I have a sister who has a cat and catbox, this will be the perfect cake for her next birthday. Fabulous , Brian , you have outdone yourself!

  12. I find chocolate caramels easier to work with than tootsie rolls - they don't need to be microwaved to be pliable. I made a variation on this cake for a halloween party last year. I figured people would laugh or say "ewwww..." and not touch the "poops" but they ate them up!

    1. I like the fact that you've taken poop pliability to a new level. Thanks for the suggestion.
